EXERCISES

Exercise 1 : Quantify & Visualize Data

  Week 1 (11/01/2023)
In our first week of starting university, Mr. Martin gave us our first exercise which is quantifying and visualizing data. Basically, we're sorting some items then we arrange it into a statistic infographic. We can use toys, buttons, coins, and etc. For this exercise, I'll be using coins since my old toys are back at my home country. I'll also use A4 paper as the medium of this exercise.

Fig 1.1 First Arrangement (Week 1, 15/01/2023)

In this arrangement, the idea is like making a pyramid formation. 5¢ resembles the star, the 10¢ resembles the outer pyramid, the 20¢ resembles the inner pyramid, and lastly the 50¢ resembles the top of the pyramid

Exercise 2 : L.A.T.C.H

After we're done with out second flip topics, we were given a task to make a L.A.T.C.H infographic with a minimum of 4 principles in one infographic poster. At first, I tried to put several ideas and decide which one to pick, which is: Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact 3rd, Pokemon, and Minecraft. In the end, I decided to pick Pokemon because it's a simple topic for this exercise.

I realized that there is many options for choosing Pokemon as the idea for my L.A.T.C.H. In this case, I choose Pokemon GO because personally it looks more interesting since it takes place in the real world.
My first approach is to use the region exclusive pokemon for the object in the L.A.T.C.H infographic and here is the result.
Fig 2.1 Pokemon GO Region Exclusive Map (Week 2, 22/01/2023)

The color border represents the area that the pokemon lives. Like for example in this map, Celesteela is at the southern hemisphere while Kartana at the northern hemisphere. On second thought, I think that this map is too busy since there are a lot of pokemons and kinda messy. For the solution, I just used several pokemon so it will look more nice and simple and remove the borders.

I added some elements in this map which is the name of the pokemon and their each type.

Exercise 3 : Kinetic Typography

In this exercise, Mr. Martin gave us an mp4 file of a song and told us to animate a kinetic typography based on this song in After Effect. At first, I got overwhelmed because I thought it would be difficult. In the end, it's quite fun to animate it although it looks really simple.

Exercise 4 : Motion Graphic Chart

Our objective in this exercise is to make an animation of a given statistic data based on what Mr. Martin gave us. He divided our class into 4 section and each section has one statistic data to be animated. In my case, I got a bar chart about student's source of stress. I did this exercise as soon as the exercise is given in class because I thought it would be a simple task.

Excercise 5 : Vector Animation

In this exercise, Mr. Martin divided the class into 4 section again and each section will be given one illustration that has to be animated.

FLIP TOPICS

Flip 1 : Types of Infographics

Fig 6.1 Flip 1 Presentation slide by Group 3.5 (Week 1, 13/01/2023)

In our first hybrid session, Mr. Martin gave us a group task to make a presentation slide about types of infographics. He also tasked us to redesign a bad infographics of our choice using any online tool that is available.

In this exercise I'll try redesign it using Canva since I kind of familiar with some of its tool. The reason I considered this a bad design is because the pie chart seems weird.

Flip 2 : Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H

In our second week, Mr. Samsul and Mr. Martin introduced us on our second flip session which is about the L.A.T.C.H. As usual, we were told to go to our group and make a presentation slide about this topic. We also got our second task which is making our own L.A.T.C.H which I already show it in Exercise 2 (Fig 2.2)

Flip 3 : Miller's Law (Chunking)

At the 3rd week, Mr. Samsul and Mr. Martin introduced another new topic which called Miller's Law aka Chunking. As usual we were assigned to our group to make a presentation slide about it.

Flip 4 : Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto

In this week we were given our last flip session. As usual, Mr. Samsul and Mr. Martin assigned us to our group to make a presentation slide about it.

REFLECTION

Throughout the day of doing this module, I learned on how to arrange information visually and effective for the viewer. I also got used on doing stuff in After Effect but still there is still much to learn in After Effect. My favourite exercise from all that is available is the L.A.T.C.H exercise because you can freely choose the theme thus making the freedom of doing what you like. Overall, Mr. Martin teaching technique on After Effect is really effective (although I learned it privately sometimes) on this module. I learned that null object can be sometimes useful in some scenario. More over, all of this experience I get from this module is quite useful for my final project.
