Project 1 - World Creation

Initially, I tried to merge Game Art module and Environment Design module into one project as I thought it would be much easier. That's what I thought until I came up with a better and more original idea in later weeks... Anyway, I'll show both progress on the pre-production that I did for this project.

Initial Concept (Scrapped Idea)

In my initial concept, I have made 3 concept design for the Town Hall, Dark Barracks, and a Defensive Building that I made originally.

1. Town Hall

The first concept I made is a new level of Town Hall for the game 'Clash of Clan'. Initially, I wanted to make a concept of the town hall with a underwater theme like Atlantis and such.

Mr. Kanaan told me that I should create a floor plan for it to understand the structure of the building well, so I did it while also adding more variants of the design.

I also tried to do some simple composition and overview of the building in case it's needed.

2. Dark Barracks

This new concept of the dark barracks was supposed to be a new level to unlock one of the mob that I created in Game Art module which is the 'Merlion'.

Fig 3.1 - 3.2 Concept with References and Side view (Week 5, 26/05/2024)

Mr. Kanaan did told me to refer to existing buildings that is in the game. Thankfully I did some research thanks to Game Art exercise. I designed the rooftop based on the merlion mob since every dark barracks featured their corresponding troop when they are upgraded into a new level to unlock certain troop, which is why I designed the rooftop to have some merlion/sea kind of vibe.

3. Defensive Building (The Beacon)

The Beacon is supposed to be a support-type of defensive building that could create an aura that increases nearby buildings' hitpoint within a perimeter. This building could be unlocked when we upgrade our town hall into the new level (Fig 2.2)

Eventually, this ends my initial concept because in Week 7, I just thought a better idea and more original. I scrapped some of the concepts and used some of them as assets for my new idea.

New Concept (Pyramid)

The concept for this one is a pyramid which is also a new boss map that player can challenge the boss in the single-player map. When players win the challenge, they'll obtain decorations and assets from the pyramid itself.

Fig 5.1 Blockout in Blender (Week 7, 05/06/2024)

Firstly, I made the blockout in Blender as I thought if I have the blockout model ready, then I can draw the structure easily and just need to follow the perspective that's already displayed.

Fig 5.3 Floor tier map (Week 8, 12/06/2024)

When I showed this to Mr. Kanaan, we thought that the structure itself is there but for now it's too plain. He also reminded me about the functionality of the structure as well.

Fig 5.3 Value and Scale (Week 8, 12/06/2024)

Mr. Kanaan also told me to put scale so that audience could understand how big or small a structure is. As this is a pyramid, I made the scale for the human small and put it side by side with one of my character from Game Art which is a wyrm/dragon.

Fig 5.4 Call Sheet (Week 8, 14/06/2024)

I made this call sheet so the audience could see how the structure is shaped and to show some details on it. I also did some composition test for future use purposes.

FEEDBACKS

Week 5 (22/05/2024)

  • Make a floor plan so people can understand the map of the structure's interior.
  • Give some design elements into the structure, what makes it special? Is it functional? Think about the functionality as well.

Week 6 (29/05/2024)

  • Make a floor plan so people can understand the map of the structure's interior.
  • Give some design elements into the structure, what makes it special? Is it functional? Think about the functionality as well.

Week 7 (05/06/2024)

  • Composition is fine

Week 8 (12/06/2024)

  • Give some details on the pyramid, give some design
  • Remember the functionality of the assets

REFLECTION

While doing this project, I never knew about call sheets before. Thanks to Mr. Kanaan, he have opened my mind towards it. He also told me that I should refer to real life structures as well and took it as reference. Personally, I think referring something based on real life is really a good idea as I could make the audience know where my design came from and thus they may be get fascinated by it.

Some struggles that I find in this project is to find a fitting structure for my project because in the earlier stage I was determined to make 3 structure but then I scrapped them for 1. I don't know if I did things right in the first place to begin with as I only followed senior's work and the requirements in MIB.

While doing this, I also learnt on shortcuts in doing something in Blender as well. Even if it serves as a blockout/reference, it's a nice thing to have personally for me as it helps me progress further.
