LECTURES

Week 7 (10/10/2022)
It's public holiday, but Mr. Vinod said that he will do an online zoom meeting from 8-8:30. In the meeting, Mr. Vinod just gave some feedbacks for those who joins the zoom and also introduce and brief about the next task.
Week 6 (03/10/2022):
In this week, all of the students required to give feedbacks to other works other than themselves. While we are giving feedbacks, Mr. Vinod is checking on our e-portfolios to score it.

Pre-recorded lecture

Mr. Vinod demonstrate on how we should do our task in Task 2 in the Youtube video he provided.

INSTRUCTION

I) Task 2: Typographic Exploration and Communication
  •     Sketching ideas & exploration
As instructed in the MIB, we need to choose 1 of the 3 editorial text that is given by Mr. Vinod. In this case, I choose the one that is called "Follow The Code". I sketch possible ideas that can make the text looks appealing. I am planning to use Adobe Illustrator to make some of the line later on.
Fig 2.1 Sketch #1 (Week 5, 29/09/2022)

Fig 2.2 Sketch #2 (Week 5, 29/09/2022)
Personally, I like sketch #2 because the headline shows like a movement which suggests the idea on follow the code. So I chose sketch #2 to be focused on and be the work that will be submitted.
  • Digitalizing
Fig 3.1 Testing layout from sketch #2 (Week 5, 30/09/2022)

At first, I thought 3 columns would be enough for this text but no, it has lots of text that I need top divide it until 5 columns. I purposely made it like a staircase so it has that movement feeling. The blank space at the left is where I'll put the headline.
Fig 3.2 Draft layout for sketch #2 (Week 6, 03/10/2022)

Apparently I don't like it because there is supposed to be a line movement at the headline but it doesn't seem to be visible. So I tried another idea on making this layout to be more appealing.
Fig 3.3 Improvised layout added with some ideas (Week 6, 03/10/2022)

In this idea, I tried to make the headline a little bit transparent and add some arrow line. I also changed the layout column from 3 to 2 columns in each page to maintain the average character per line. I made this line movement at the headline more thicker so that it's visible for the reader.
I tried to make another layout, but this time with different font. I used Futura Std for this layout and as for the headline I use Illustrator. I scrapped the idea of headline on sketch #1 because it looks boring.

Fig 3.5  Arranging layout and adding some lines (Week 6, 08/10/2022)
Fig 3.6 Layout #2 (Week 6, 08/10/2022)
I purposely made the line in pairs and parallel so that it can describe some movements just like in a matrix field. I noticed that I haven't fixed the kerning and letterspacing here so plan to fix it before I make the alternative layouts. Although Mr. Vinod said that we need to make some alternatives from the same layout, I tried to re-compose the composition in both layout 1 and layout 2.
  • Layout Information
Fig 4.1 Layout #1 (Week 6, 03/10/2022)
Headline: Futura Std Extra Bold Condensed Oblique (made in Illustrator)
Typeface: Adobe Caslon Pro Bold (sub headline) & Adobe Caslon Pro Regular (text body)
Type size: 12 pt
Leading: 12 pt
Paragraph spacing: 12 pt
Average characters per line: 55

Fig 4.2 Layout #2 (Week 6, 08/10/2022)
Headline: Futura Std Bold Condensed (made in Illustrator)
Typeface: Futura Std Bold Condensed Oblique (sub headline), Futura Std Book (text body), Futura Std Book Oblique (text)
Type size: 15 pt (sub headline), 10 pt (text body)
Leading: 12 pt
Paragraph spacing: 12 pt
Average characters per line: 58

  • Making variants
I firstly made the variants for layout 1 by rearranging the layout and changing the arrow to multiple lines. The idea is to make like the headline moves to the right side. I also made the headline black and white instead of like plain black in the first variant of Layout  #1. I tried reducing the size of the headline and made it not transparent. Basically, it's a combination of layout idea #1 and #2

Fig 5.1 Variant #1 (Week 6, 08/10/2022)
Typeface: Futura Std Heavy Oblique (sub headline), Futura Std Book (text body), Futura Std Book Oblique (text)
Type size: 13 pt (sub headline), 12 pt (text body)
Leading: 12 pt
Paragraph spacing : 12 pt
Average character per line: 47

The second variant I use layout #2's headline and try to make another visual element. In this case I use arrows instead of singular lines. I tried to use Gill Sans Std typeface in this layout and the result is quite good although it looks the same like the Futura Std. As for the layout I tried making it like descend and ascend.
Fig 5.2 Variant #2 (Week 6, 08/10/2022)
Typeface: Gill Sans Std Bold Italic (sub headline), Gill Sans Std Regular (text body), Gill Sans Std Italic (text)
Type size: 15 pt (sub headline), 13 pt (text body)
Leading: 12 pt
Paragraph spacing: 12 pt
Average character per line: 50

Based on the information I got, it seems that it lacks of character in each line length since it has to be 55-65 characters per line. I think of changing the columns usage, instead of using the 4 columns I just use 3. Although I think there is another solution if I don't want to change the columns usage, I can just change the size of the typefaces in the text body so more characters can fit in the line length.
Fig 5.3 Fixed variant #2 (Week #6, 08/10/2022)

Fig 5.4 Fixed variant #1 (Week #6, 08/10/2022)
It's just like my hypothesis, it's either change the type size or the usage of column. In Fig .3 I reduced the font into 10 pt and the line length for average characters turns to 60. As for Fig .4 I changed both usage of columns and type size to 10 pt.

  • Final submission
In the end, I choose Layout #3 as my final submission. Reason being is that layout #3 gave me the feeling of the motion in the layout.

FEEDBACKS

Week 7 (10/20/2022)
Public holiday

Week 6 (03/10/2022)
Feedback summary: it needs more kerning, try to give more visual hierarchy and elements into the design, make the layout more structured, maintain the average character per line by adjusting the columns and more.

REFLECTION

Experience
This task is good for me to train on how to make layouts and how to express typography. To be honest, I kinda struggled at making this because from the beginning I have no interest on Typography. It took me some times to make this and to use the perfect layout even though it looks pretty basic in the eyes of professional. Well I am happy at the very least since I have finished the task.

Observation
Every time I am doing this task, I always forgot to align the text line and also to notice the line length at each of the line. Whenever I found this small mistake it makes me want to hit my keyboard and I don't know why. I noticed that with good layout, the expression for this text will be really good.

Findings
I found that this task were supposed to train me on how to make the perfect layout for certain texts. I also need to follow the same rules as the previous task (Type Formatting) so that the text is appealing for the readers.

FURTHER READING
Fig 8.1 Vignelli Canon on Design

I read this book after I am done with this task, I read as a refreshment for my brain. Surprisingly this book got good reference and layout as well. I didn't know that grids like 4x8 would help making layout and made it look appealing. Basically this book has everything that I need for this task, but too bad I have done it early without reading this book earlier.
