Pre-recorded Lecture
Visual Analysis is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
In other words, it's a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake. It is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images.
The purpose of visual analysis can recognise the choices that a designer has made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, contents, or meaning.
There are 3 phases of Visual Analysis, which is:
- Observation (looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice)
- Analysis (think about your observation and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations)
- Interpretation (observation, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources)

1. Observation
This design work is in a portrait format. It seems that the main color that is used in here is black, white, brown, grey, red, and peach. I could say that the color in this artwork is in warm color spectrum at the background and cool color spectrum at the rest of the work. In this artwork it shows 5 men that is look like a politician and a lot of people beneath and what it looks like inside them. There is what I think it is a watermark of the artist and somekind of a symbol at the bottom right side of the artwork. As for the composition it looks like the 5 men is placed side by side while the people beneath them placed in pile. There is some limbs that is trying to get out from the cell such as a leg and hands.
2. Analysis
I analyzed that there is some design principles that can be seen throughout this artwork. For example is that this artwork is symmetrically balanced. It emphasizes the people that are caged by the 5 men neck tie and blazer which also resembles the gestalt theory of the principles of continuation and law of symmetry & order, and the 5 men that wears a neck tie and blazer. (Fig 2.2).
Fig 2.2 Gestalt theory used in this artwork (08/11/2022, Week 11)
The gestalt theory itself creates an illusion to the illustration where the neck tie and the blazer of the 5 men looks like a prison cell that traps the people beneath. This illusion draws the viewer attention to look at the people that are caged inside the 5 men body. There is also some kind of repitition of pattern and shape that is formed by the 5 men position which personally I can see it looks like a fence and also repitition of neck tie. After observing again I can see that it seems there is a frame that is created by the red color (top side) and black color (bottom side) of the artwork (Fig 2.3)
Fig 2.3 Repitition pattern that is made by the government and also the end of the tie (08/11/2022, Week 11)
If you noticed, the people inside the cage are also forming a somekind of pile which resembles the unity of the design principle in the artwork. The pile of people itself looks assymetrically balanced for me personally because it looks like the each side are slightly unbalanced as in the quantity of the people in the pile, but it managed to make the center of the pile to be the focus point. Overall, there is 2 focus point on this artwork. The first focus is at the 5 men that is using neck tie and blazer and the second focus is at the pile of people. There is also a proportion in this artwork which will create a hierarchy to the artwork. Starting by looking at the 5 men and then to the pile of people beneath them.
3. Interpretation
This artwork is a digital illustration inspired by political issues like corruption of power in controlling the society. Personally I think this was made in a canvas using some paint like oil paint and acrylic paint. This kind of artwork reminds me of those old artwork that usually displayed in the museum because of how they use the paint to make this artwork.
I don't know why but the style reminded me of this painting (Fig 2.4). It's a painting that is displayed from The Louvre in Paris to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Put that aside, this artwork (Fig 2.1) is designed to tell that sometimes politics have made people become slaves to them for personal uses. Take corruption as an example, the government will say that they will use the money that the people gave for supporting the country but in reality, they use it for their personal uses like buying luxurious stuff and more. It also tries to tell us that politician may abuse their power in order to get away from their problems by bribing. The politic controls the innocent and took all of their freedom. The power of wealth reigns over the poor masses. What I am trying to say is that the inequality that we have here is the inequality of freedom, power, and also classes.

- Sketch
My sketch idea are inspired by the piece of artwork I just analyzed (Fig 2.1). I was planning to make something that has the inequality of freedom or inequality of class theme. My first sketch idea is an innocent boy that is chained in a prison for doing nothing but the judges sentenced him into years of prison because he is a look-alike of a criminal. This sketch is unfinished because I rushed this sketch yesterday (14/11/2022).
Fig 3.1 1st Sketch idea (13/11/2022, Week 11)
My second sketch idea is a girl being stringed and controlled by someone that has higher standard than her and use her as their tool. The way I draw this second sketch is inspired on how puppeteer manipulates their puppet using the strings.
Fig 3.2 2nd Sketch idea (13/11/2022, Week 11)
Fig 3.3 Sketch idea #3 (16/11/2022, Week 12)
In this idea (Fig 3.3), the person in there is me when I was really depressed at 2020 because whenever I wanted to express my idea on an assignment at school, people kept ignoring me as if I am just a wall. For 2 months I am an empty shell thinking about life and at that time too I developed my alter ego. In this time too my feeling got rejected by someone I know. In this sketch idea, the idea is that my alter ego is trying to take control of my empty body and let him take control of my body forever which I think fits the theme for inequality in freedom. Come to think again, it might be more better if I add more like some panel at the background like Fig 3.4 that contains some inequality that I have experienced.
Fig 3.5 Variation of Sketch idea #3 (16/11/2022, Week 12)
For this variation of sketch idea #3 (Fig 3.5), the alter ego has already take full control on the empty vessel. Personally, I don't like this idea because I think it's not fits the theme if we only look at it without any background story. I post it here just to show my attempt on making this assignment :).

2. Digitization
Fig 4.1 Coloring base color (21/11/2022, Week 13)
Fig 4.2 Shading progress (21/11/2022, Week 13)
I have decided that I'll make the 2 hands shake each other just like how I explain it in the sketch explanation below Fig 3.6.
Fig 4.3 Progress (21/11/2022, Week 13)
I am planning of adding some words on this work like something of an awareness like "Stop Slavery" or like "Stop Human-trafficking". The silhouette behind the cage is 2 person that has the high authority just like how I explained it below Fig 3.6. After getting feedbacks from Dr. Jinchi, I decided to make the hand-shaking to not be blurred. I have added some finishing to my design work and this is the final outcome.
Fig 4.4 Final Outcome (29/11/2022, Week 14)
FEEDBACK
Week 14 (29/11/2022)
Dr. Jinchi said that instead of making the hands blurry make it clear instead. She also said that make the line of the cage thicker. Lastly she said that try to add some money symbols on the work.
Week 13 (22/11/2022)
The background story in Fig 3.6 is better than the previous sketch I made (Fig 3.1 and Fig 3.2), Dr. Jinchi suggested I could make the hand of the girl in Fig 3.6 hold the prison bar. Overall, I just need to adjust some parts when I digitize this sketch.
Week 12 (15/11/2022)
Make sure the sketch idea has the same idea as the inequality theme you analyzed.
Week 11 (08/11/2022)
It need some improvisation on some of the writing part. Overall, Dr. Jinchi said I may start making the design work.
REFLECTION
Personally this final project is fun, it's a shame that I got burn out when the final project for all module started which is sucks. I tried my best to make this project look fulfilling and the outcome surprised me. The fact that I managed to use all of the design principle means that my study experience in this module is not wasted.
