INSTRUCTION

PROGRESS

Fig 1.1 First idea sketch
At first I was thinking of making something like this (Fig 1.1). We were planning to add some illustration on the back cover of the angpao. As for the background we will put a scale texture like semi circle like below. For the final idea we decided to make something minimalistic.

After we were done with our sketches on the idea, we start to divide our task. Derin will make the golden border (in Fig 1.2) and 4 letters which is 'T', 'O', 'H', and 'E', while I'll make the background and the letter 'G', 'R', 'N', and 'S'. Derin will also make the illustration for the back cover.

Fig 1.3 Sketches of letters

In this sketch, there are 2 'R' and 'N'. I used the 'R' that shaped like a lantern and the 'N' that shaped like a firecracker (although I thinks it looks like a dynamite). The 'G' and the 'S' shapes are inspired by the Nian from the lion dance. At first I wanted to make the N looks like a dragon like how chinese dragon are, but after showing that to my groupmate we decided to make it more simple by just make the shape looks like a firecracker.

Fig 1.4 Attempts on making the background

Making the background itself shockingly is very simple. What I only need is that I make a circle and repeatedly make another circle inside the circle. After I'm done with that, I divide the circle become a semi circle using shape builder tool.

At some point, my groupmate can't manage to make how the E should look like. Her first attempt to make the 'E' is by making a bunny shape. The attempt she made is at the left side of the 'H' she made. I tried improvise the E she made by making the middle part of the 'E' become a scarf that the bunny wears. This idea is inspired by a Pokemon called Frogadier.

Fig 1.6 Frogadier, the Pokemon I used as an inspiration to make the letter 'E' in this angpao

After we were done with both of our task, it's time to assemble it into the angpao we've made.

We've decided to use the top left for the front cover because it looks better than the rest.

REFLECTION

Experience
Experience wise, from all of the task that has been given in Typography this is the task that I have a lot of fun with because there's not much to design in typeface. The only thing that I don't like in this task is that it has to be done in group. To be honest, I think I did majority of the task even though its a group project. But still, I respect my groupmate too since she also tried to help me even when she got some stuff to do.

Observation
I observed that when making this design, I did a lot of visual research in order to know what good angpao looks like. The fact that this task is only a week length, I managed to have it done although my friend annoyed me in several scene when I am doing this task.

Findings
Overall, I think that this special task is good for me to learn on how to make a real graphic design. The fact that there is a chance to get money as a reward motivates me more to make this design. I learned much from this task too. In general, it's a great unofficial task because I got to experience different stuff in this module.
