Advanced Typography - Task 2
26/04/2023 - 31/05/2023 / Week 4 - Week 9
Week 4 (26/04/2023)
I edited the background into a dark one to emphasize my brand and it looked good. I use the Vanishing Point at the Filter tab to embed the brand and tried to edit the brand realisticly embedded into the badge
I am so glad that the mood in this picture is in a dark purple color vibe so I could stand my brand identity even better.

LECTURES
Week 8 (24/05/2023)
International Study Week
Week 7 (17/05/2023)
In this week, we had a brief for our Task 2B which is to make a collateral of our brand identity. We also took a small photography session for our portraits later on that will be used in our brand identity.
Week 6 (10/05/2023)
In this week, we had an online class instead of offline because the AC isn't working. As usual Mr. Vinod gave us some feedbacks on our key artwork and gave us another week to finalized it because he's kind of disappointed on majority of the class work.
Week 5 (03/05/2023)
In this week, we all give feedback to each other for our key artwork. Mr. Vinod gave us some tips on making this key artwork and leave us for some minutes to make a new key artwork after we know about mind-mapping
In this week, we only had a simple brief about what will we do in task 2a and what needs to be finished for the next week. I assume that for the next week we need to finish our ideas on our key artwork and also finalized them at the same time
PRE-RECORDED LECTURE
Task 1 - Exercises
INSTRUCTION
Fig 1.1 Advanced Typography MIB
Task 2A - Key Artwork
In this task we were tasked to make a key artwork of our name/pseudonym. The requirements of the key artwork are as follow:
- Does the key artwork symbolically/creatively represent the person?
- Is the key artwork readable and legible?
- Does the key artwork look well crafted (lines/shapes)?
- Does the key artwork look like a logo—is it free standing (w/background)?
- Is there a good balance between negative and positive space?
- Is there unnecessary use of non-objective elements?
Fig 2.1 Design #1 (Week 5, 01/05/2023)
As you can see, this design is obviously based on a rabbit. How come up with this design is that I tried writing my name in cursive. After observing it, I realized that the 'L' can looked like a rabbit ears. Not only that, in this design I tried to convey that I am a creative person and shy towards other people since rabbits are naturally shy. In the end, I scrapped this idea because people couldn't simply look at the "L" letter in this design.
Fig 2.2 Design #2 (Week 5, 01/05/2023)
In this design, I used my pseudonym "guren" as my second design idea. To be honest there is not that much to convey from my personality. I made this design because I was inspired by UNIQLO's logo. I don't like this design because the strokes are inconsistent and there's no meaning in this design.
Fig 2.3 Design #3 (Week 5, 03/05/2023)
In this design, it has the same concept as Design #1 but instead I use an elephant to represent the design. The reason I chose elephant is that they had one of my personality, loyalty. In this design, what I'm trying to convey is that I am a loyal and short-tempered person. The other reason is that I am also an expressive person just like an elephant. But still, it has the same issue with Design #1, which is the "L" is not visible to viewer even though I tried emphasize it.
Fig 2.4 Design #4 (Week 6, 08/05/2023)
Lastly, my final design is based on how I look like in the real world. It is simply to convey on how my characteristic are in real life. In this design, I made the letter "g" and "e" the same shape to make it look balance unlike the previous sketches I made for this design. In the end, I used design #4 as my final product for this task.
Fig 2.5 Final design (Week 6, 10/05/2023)
After we're done with the final design, it's time to choose a color palette. Mr. Vinod suggested us to choose a palette at https://colorhunt.co.
Fig 2.6 My choice of color palette (Week 7, 17/05/2023)
I chose this color palette because I found it interesting for my brand identity as I aim my brand to be like a gaming brand. So I start experimenting on the colors and here's my process.
Task 2B - Collateral
For task 2B, we are tasked to implement our design on daily stuff for example, animate our key artwork, and transforming our key artwork into a new brand using Instagram account.
Research
Fig 3.1 https://www.pentagram.com
I did some research on pentagram website since they had a lot of references and I thought that I could use this references to help me on making my key artwork. All I can say when I looked at the designs at Pentagram is that if it's not "simple" then it's "abstract". After all, this website focuses on creating brands across the world. The design that's made in Pentagram are all high quality and some of them looks luxurious.
Collateral #1 - Brand Identity GIF Animation
For my animation, I used Adobe After Effect because I have familiar with it since I practice using it frequently at my short semester. In this animation, Mr. Vinod said that it just need to be a simple animation. For that, my animation in the brand identity is just to make the "g" and "e" blink like an eye.

Collateral #2 - T-Shirt Design
For my t-shirt design, I am trying to find a black or dark t-shirt for my brand to stand out. My first plan is to put the brand on a dark purple shirt but the choices that Google gave me doesn't fit my taste. So instead, I use this dark gray shirt I found from Google.
Fig 5.1 T-shirt Mockup
I had to remove every watermarks in here using Photoshop and embed my brand on the t-shirt. Of course, I tried to embed it as realistic as I can by using the Displace filter.

Collateral #3 - Label Pin/Badge Design
I use the same step as I did at Collateral #2, I find the template that I wanted through the internet and I stumbled upon one and it's from Adobe Stock.

I edited the background into a dark one to emphasize my brand and it looked good. I use the Vanishing Point at the Filter tab to embed the brand and tried to edit the brand realisticly embedded into the badge

Collateral #4 - Gaming Mouse Design
This is my personal preference for my brand identity to be embed in, a gaming mouse. Tried to embed the brand into the mouse as realisticly as I can and I add some glow effect into the brand so it looks like it could give some RGB light.

Collateral #5 - Profile
For this collateral, we did a small photoshoot session in class. Mr. Vinod said that the photo needs to have a natural light.Fig 8.1 First Attempt (Week 7, 17/05/2023)
Fig 8.2 Second Attempt (Week 8, 22/05/2023)
Mr. Vinod told me that the first attempt doesn't look stand out for my brand, so I did a second attempt. To be honest, I felt like the second attempt seems worse because it doesn't have my characteristic in it. So to make things even, I used Fig 8.2 as my profile picture and Fig 8.1 for me to put my brand. I felt like the plain black and white color feels blank, so I blend some colors into it to look more interesting. I also edited some parts of me. In this design I made it special because I also designed the inverted color version of the original (Original = the red "glen brand", Inverted version = the purple "glen brand"
For our final collateral, Mr. Vinod told us to make a new Instagram account for us to present our brand identity into the internet. He said that the username of the Instagram account had to be the brand identity's name (in my case it's glen). If the name has been taken, Mr. Vinod said think of a creative way to make our brand name to be selectable as a username. My first attempt is "91e_n_" but it looks ugly so I use that name temporarily. 10 minutes later, I tried generating a good username with the help of ChatGPT. Alas, I finally found a good one which is "9.le.n". I also took this opportunity to make a new art account :D.
Fig 9.1 Instagram Account (Week 7, 17/05/2023)
Now comes the challenging part, which is to composite the content I wanted in a 3x3 layout for my Instagram account. Mr. Vinod said that I need to make as imaginative and creative as possible, so here's my attempt and will be the final one too.
After showing it to Mr. Vinod, he said that I did a good job. To be honest, deep inside I still feel like something is wrong and needs to be change. Alas I found the problem, which is the color on the background of the label pin and the t-shirt. I changed the color to the same color palette and the result is better than before.

Additional Week
In week 11, Mr. Vinod wanted us to revise our layouts on our Instagram profile so I did what he asked. I did some changes on the background color of the label pin and the t-shirt because I realized that the purple color in my brand identity page is overwhelming the red color. I tried to balance it and here's the result.

FEEDBACK
Week 9
General Feedback: give captions to every post to convey what you are presenting to the audience
Specific Feedback: none, did a good job
Week 8
International Study Week
Week 7
General Feed: the finalized key artwork is all fine, I can already start adding some color palette to the design
Specific Feed: the third design is more distinctful than the other so Mr. Vinod suggested me to use the third design to use in my collateral design.
Week 6
General Feed: looks simple and learn to describe your key artwork so the audience caught interest in the artwork
Specific Feed: there is no need to add a line on top of L because it could misguide the audience in reading it because it looks like a T and there is no need to add an additional visual element
Week 5
General Feed: every artwork needs a meaning in it, make the strokes consistent
Specific Feed: Rabbit Glen: the merge of e and n makes the black to overwhelming, Guren: strokes are inconsistent, Elephant Glen: needs good meaning, "Glen" Glen: can be refine more
REFLECTION
Experience
In this exercise, I had a lot of fun on making my own brand identity. Reason being is that this is the chance for me to show my potentials to the world. I enjoy half of the time while doing this task especially the part where I finally done revising my brand identity logo. Integrating it to some mockups however is not so enjoyable since almost all of them has watermark and I had to remove every single watermarks that is available.
Observations
Consistency, balance, & readability are the keys in order to make a good brand identity. This are the 3 principles I used when I am designing my brand logo. Finding the best mockup for your brand is also make a representation of your brand to the world so I had to find the mockup that I want my brand to shine best. Lastly, a simple color palette is enough for someone to identify our brand. (All of this observations are based on my perspective.)
Findings
I found that in making a brand identity we need to be serious about it since people will be looking at our reputation by the identity we made. This task will also help us in our next task which is to make a font. Overall, I found that this task is the most entertaining in Advanced Typography module.
FURTHER READINGS
Fig 11.1 Typo graphic de sign: Form and Communication by Rob Carter
I read this book in preparation for my next task. It got some useful information for me to use in my next task. Since there are a lot of pages in this book, I skimmed through the pages till my brain hurts.
