PRE-RECORDED LECTURES

    Week 1-3

    A. Research

Research is the systematic and creative investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. Research can increase one's knowledge including knowledge of humans, culture, and society. Student research is self-directed work in which students from all areas of study work individually or as part of a team to explore issues of interest to them.

Research expands one's understanding and knowledge of academic field. It defines one's academic, career, and personal interests. We can develop critical thinking, leadership, time management, and communication skills. We can gain academic experiences that help expand one's resume. We can also get to explore research techniques.

To start a research, we must first identify a field of interest. After we've found a topic that we find interesting, we delve into further research about it to establish an area where you are interested to conduct research about. Write the research problem in the form of a statement. Formulate a research question that is derived from the problem. Lastly, identify the objectives of the research on what you like to achieve from conducting this research.

    B. Problem Statement

A problem statement is a concise description of an issue to be addressed or a condition to be improved upon. It identifies as the gap between the current (problem) state and desired (goal) state of a process. A problem statement paves the way of the reader to understand the research problem.

Fig 1.1 Problem statement example

    C. Research Question

Research question is an answerable inquiry into a specific issue. It is the initial step in a research project. Writing a good research question means you have something you want to study. The basic process in writing a research question are:
  • Specify specific issue
  • Decide what we want to know about the specific issue
  • Turn what we want to know and the specific concern into a question
  • Ensure that the question is answerable
  • Check to make sure the question is not too broad
    D. Research Objective

In general, research objectives describe what we expect to achieve by a project. It may be linked with a hypothesis or used as a statement of purpose in a study that does not have a hypothesis. A statement of research objectives can serve to guide the activities of research.

Fig 1.2 Research objective example

    E. Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. It is a specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen in a study. A hypothesis does not have to be correct. While the hypothesis predicts what the researchers expect to see, the goal of the research is to determine whether this guess is right or wrong . When conducting an experiment, researchers might explore a number of factors to determine which ones might contribute to the ultimate outcome.

    F. Variables

A variable is something that can be changed or varied, such as characteristics or value. Variables are generally used in psychology experiments to determine if changes to one thing result in changes to another.

FEEDBACK

Week 4 (27/04/2023)
Research objectives can be refined a little bit and for the problem statement just add some additional information on how you'll obtain the information for your research.

Week 3 (20/04/2023)
Problem statement of the research is basically a rationale, refine the problem statement more and perhaps make it according to the research question like who, where, etc.

Week 2 (13/04/2023)
Problem statement is too rudimentary, try to dig deeper to the problem and refine the draft more.

REFLECTION

To be honest, from all of the module I have learnt throughout my journey since Semester 1, this module is kind of overwhelming for me but not as overwhelming as Interactive Design. It encourages me to do a real research and by that I meant it like getting information from Google Scholar. At first impression, I am scared on what this module will dominate me but time after time I realized this module is just like the same research thing I did in Intercultural Design module. Overall, this part of the module so far I can still manage to live in and I am looking forward for the next task.
