Project 1 - Stylized Character Blockout

In this project, we are to make a character blockout based on either the character we made in Character Design module or make another character for this module. The character can be human or any form of biped creatures or hybrid, or quadrupeds. In this case, I used my original character that I made years ago as the subject for this module.

The sculpture later on should capture as the listed components below:
  • Proportion
  • Character Identity
  • Theme
  • Readable Silhouette
  • Identical Landmarks
  • Initiated Style
  • Muscle Flow
At first attempt, I tried to sculpt it based on this picture right here. It didn't go well as I was struggling using ZBrush at this time.

Mr. Kanaan told me that it needs more volume in it. Honestly, I felt like the creature is so malnourished. Mr. Kanaan told me that I should make a turnaround of the character first so that it could help me to know better of the anatomy. At first, I didn't think of it so I immediately make the turnaround of the character first before resuming doing the sculpting process.

When I showed this too Mr. Kanaan, he told me that some parts of it can be fix such as the legs. He also told me that I should look at references like Groot for my character. He said that I could make the leg more longer so I did it.

Fig 1.9 Refined Turn Around (Week 10, 1/11/2023)

In this turn around I made, I move the mouth into the belly area so that the mouth could easily connect to the stomach just like how Ryomen Sukuna design is from Jujutsu Kaisen.

Moving on to the sculpting process, I tried to use many brushed such as the Move, Damien Standard, and Clay Buildup. I also use some trim tool to make sharp edges such as the spikes around the legs and arms.

When I showed the refined blockout to Mr. Kanaan, he told me that I could make the character hunch forward to make it stand balance. After refining that minor part, he told me that I could submit Project 1 and continue on Project 2.

FEEDBACKS

    Week 6 (04/10/2023)
  • Give more volume
  • Look more reference
    Week 10 (01/11/2023)
  • Refine the leg parts and make it longer
  • Give the drawing at the turnaround more volume
  • Make the character hunch forward so that it looks balance when it's standing

REFLECTION

My first impression on this module is quite frustrating. I didn't expect to 3D sculpt at first so I was very nervous and devastated since I have no experience in doing 3D sculpting. I tried to follow the flow even though I got burnt out at the middle of the semester. But in the end, I get the hang of it. I just had some bad time management for this semester and I hope I could fix that problem of mine. Overall, I feel like 3D sculpting using ZBrush is fun after I know all the shortcuts. Even though Mr. Kanaan always give me feedback by finding minor things, I could only be patient towards him and do some changes so that he can be satisfied.
