Vehicle and Props Design - Pre-Production
14/09/2023 - 16/09/2023 / Week 3 - Week 12
Mr. Kanaan told me that I could find more references from Pinterest. But before he told me this, I already drew some designs which I scrapped since it's just an experimentation.
After showing this to Mr. Kanaan, he told me to choose one color of my liking. In this case, I chose #1 since it gave me those mysterious and ominous vibe.

Project 1 - Pre-Production
i) Brainstorming
In this project, we are to make a vehicle based on the world that we picked. It may be a steampunk, cyberpunk, sci-fi, etc. In this project, I want to make a vehicle that is based on the world of Mobile Suit Gundam as I am a fan of it. We only need to make 1 type of vehicle which is either land, water, or air (in this project, I chose land). In this project, we will be showcasing our process from the start till the end which is:
- Mood board and style guide
- Thumbnail sketches
- Silhouettes
- Rough value painting
- Design breakdowns
Starting from the moodboard, I begin to compile some visual references from tanks to mobile suit.

Mr. Kanaan told me that I could find more references from Pinterest. But before he told me this, I already drew some designs which I scrapped since it's just an experimentation.
Fig 1.2 Initial Sketch (Week 5, 28/09/2023)
He told me that if I wanted to make a vehicle, it should be more interesting rather than just a simple design of a car. Luckily, I did an extra design which is design #3. At first, he is intrigued as he told me to try further develop it so I did.
Fig 1.3 Further development of Fig 1.2 (Week 5, 28/09/2023)
In sketch #2, I tried making the legs more thicker and durable so that it could manage to lift the hull of it's body. In sketch #3, it's a further development as I add some mecha feature which I took reference from Guntank. In sketch #4, it's just a variation of sketch #3 where instead of gatling guns, I replace the hand with actual hand that could fire bullets in each finger. I took the Zeong as reference when I draw sketch #4.

Eventually, this idea is scrapped as it's too mecha-ish instead of a vehicle. Mr. Kanaan told me that it should be a vehicle instead of a robot. At first I was confused but after some explanation from Mr. Kanaan, I nod in understandment as I scrapped this idea and proceed to find more reference for my new vehicle.
Fig 1.6 Updated Moodboard (Week 6, 05/10/2023)
When I am trying to draw a base, I stumbled upon an interesting design that is also from Mobile Suit Gundam. It's a variation of the RX-75 Guntank and it looks more cooler and menacing. So I decided to use it as reference for my vehicle.

Fig 1.8 Initial Concept (Week 6, 05/10/2023)
I showed this concept to Mr. Kanaan and he told me that I could go for sketch #4. After receiving some feedbacks, I have decided to further develop sketch #4.
ii) Development
In this stage, I start to refine the sketch a bit as I also experiment in giving some colors. My plan is to make the vehicle suits for the antagonists so I followed the color palette that the antagonists use in the world of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Fig 2.1 First Color Application (Week 6, 05/10/2023)
In this palette, I told Mr. Kanaan that I wanted to go for the red one. He told me that it's too bright in saturation so he advised me in playing around with the saturation and hue. I end up making more color palette so that I could have more options in choosing later. He also told me that I should remove the excessive lines on the vehicles as it looks busy.
Fig 2.2 More color palette (Week 7, 12/10/2023)
After showing this, Mr. Kanaan told me that I could go either for #3 or #7. He also told me that I should refine the vehicle more in viewing wise so I did tried to play with the perspective.

Fig 2.4 Rough value (Week 8, 18/10/2023)
Fig 2.5 Colored vehicle (Week 8, 18/10/2023)
When I showed this to Mr. Kanaan at Week 10, he told me that I could refine the perspective more. When I look at my work again, I felt like it's crap so I decided to redraw the vehicle in the most logical way in viewing it based on perspective. Mr. Kanaan also taught me on vanishing points and apply it to the real world so that I could understand more. Eventually, I understand the concept as I then draw it again but this time it's different. I draw in my sketchbook first since I am used in traditional art before I put it in Photoshop so I can draw it digitally using my drawing tablet (XP Pen 13.3 Pro).
Fig 2.6 Sketch in my sketchbook (Week 10, 03/11/2023)
With the help of the vanishing point that Mr. Kanaan taught me, I can finally able to draw it based on the logical perspective. The only thing I need to do now is to apply some lineart and colors later.

After showing this to Mr. Kanaan, he told me to choose one color of my liking. In this case, I chose #1 since it gave me those mysterious and ominous vibe.

He told me that I could give some adjustments later in the final project to showcase this vehicle like adding decals and base floor.

FEEDBACK
Week 3 (14/09/2023)
- Find more references
Week 5 (28/09/2023)
- Give more volume and depths into the sketches
- don't make it too mecha-ish since we are going for vehicle, not robots
Week 6 (05/10/2023)
- Sketch #4 can be exaggerate more by arming it with more weapons
- Color can explore more so that there's more option, but for now the red one suits the vehicle
Week 7 (12/10/2023)
- You can go for color #3 and #7 as it fits the vehicle's vibe
Week 10 (02/11/2023)
- Give more volume and details to the vehicle
- Pick 1 color of your liking
Week 11 (09/11/2023)
- Give details to the vehicle
- add some depths and overlapping parts to make it more personified
REFLECTION
To be honest, I felt like this project took me so much time because of my poor time management (and that's my fault). I felt like it's a miracle that I could somehow finish this project and felt happy for a second before I realized there's 2 more project to go. In the end, I did speed things up as I start to stay awake until 3-4 A.M until my task is finished. Overall, this project could be finished faster if I had a good time management and it felt fun in some parts.
