Digital Matte Painting - Project 1 & 2: Invisible Set Extension
02/05/2024 - 18/07/2024 | Week 2 - Week 13
My initial attempt in photobashing is sucks. I watched some existing tutorial videos and speedpaints of people doing photobash to understand more and write down what I did wrong. After watching their tutorials, I then continue doing my matte painting.

Project 1 & 2 Invisible Set Extension
Project 1
In this project, I decided to combine them into one blog since they're both the same thing. We are to make an extension like for movies or TV shows. For my extension, I have decided to go for an extension that's in Godzilla from the Monsterverse.

At first, I thought I was in the right direction until I asked Mr. Kanaan for feedbacks. I then realized what went wrong and scrapped the ideas. Instead of making something new, I recycled some of the work that I made in the exercises.

I still need one more painting to do to meet the requirement which I then start doing another two painting in case one is bad.
Fig 2.7 - 2.8 New Painting (Week 8, 14/06/2024)
Mr. Kanaan told me that I should use the one on the right so that the three digital painting later on will have the same theme and same location. Which means it's like 3 shots of the same location but with different angle and position in each shot.

I thought to myself that this colored version is just crap and I decided to consult with Mr. Kanaan on what to do next. He told me that I should photobash instead since I got the base plate ready. So I did start photobashing (for those artists who thinks photobash is tracing, it's not, it's a technique that blends various photographics and digital element into a stunning and often realistic final artwork. So, it's NOT tracing).

You might think why I changed the cave painting into something more simpler. It's because I realized, too many stalagmites are very busy plus time is running out for me to photobash each stalagmite.
Project 2
The second project is just a wrap up and polishing part for Project 1. At this time, I continue to try adding depths and more stuff to the existing painting.

FEEDBACKS
Week 9 (20/06/2024)
- Give depths on the illustration
- The idea is there, just need to improvise it
Week 10 (27/06/2024)
- Give depths on the illustration
- Properly photobash the painting, watch some tutorials to understand better
Week 12 (11/07/2024)
- Give depths on some area of the painting
- Adjust the lightings, don't make it too monotone
REFLECTION
My struggles in doing this project is to properly giving depths on the painting as some parts of them doesn't look realistic enough or natural. Thanks to Mr. Kanaan's guidance, I can atleast understand the basic of matte painting and photobash. I honestly not satisfied with the result itself as in the timeframe, I somehow got sick all of sudden. Still, I tried my best to do my work and submit it before the deadline. As the painting is done, I just need to make a thematic animation for the next project.
