Project 1 - Concept Art

In this project, I continue my exploration that I did in the exercise. Since I have done some design exploration, it's time for me to pick the suitable color for their designs.

1. Merlion

Fig 2.1 - 2.6 Color Exploration (Week 4, 21/05/2024)

In this color exploration, I have based them on the color palettes that are available and also their environment habitat, which is: Coastal, Abyss, Deep Sea, Saltwater, Royal, and Tundra. After much of consideration which color I should pick so that Mr. Kanaan has an easier decision, I picked the Deep Sea and Royal type to be the nominee.

Fig 2.7 Selective Option (Week 6, 02/06/2024)

After much of consideration, Mr. Kanaan told me that I should continue on Design #4 while also using some assets that the other design has like Design #5.

Fig 2.8 Merlion Final Design (Week 8, 13/06/2024)

The gradient is just a testing on light that is being hit by the mob. For example, Gradient #1 shows that it's being hit with some mysterious abyssal light while Gradient #2 is being hit with sunlight. In addition, I also did some poses exploration on the mob as well.

Fig 2.9 Pose & Behavior Exploration (Week 3, 10/05/2024)

These poses are for splash art exploration to figure on which will suit the best. It also serves as a sheet on the mob's behavior. This sheet will also be applied to other characters.

2. Hoggie

Fig 3.1 - 3.4 Color Exploration (Week 5, 23/05/2024)

If I may be honest, I personally don't like designing and coloring this mob. It's purpose was only to be a filler but I know the job is need to be done. As usual, the color shows its habitat variation: Volcanic, Desert, Forest, and Swamp type.

Fig 3.5 Selective Option (Week 6, 02/06/2024)

Showing the selective option to Mr. Kanaan, he told me that I should choose instead. Personally I picked number 1 because it has more simpler shape and silhouette which could ease the readability of the figure.

3. Sentinel Guardian

Fig 4.1 - 4.5 Color Exploration (Week 5, 24/05/2024)

I enjoy very much when I do some color exploration with this character. I want it to have that mystical vibe to the character and also tried to relate it into the sea or other water areas. In this case, the color I tried to relate are: Saltwater, Deep Sea, Freshwater, Coral, and Arctic.

Fig 4.6 Selective Option (Week 6, 03/06/2024)

In this selective options, I chose #5 as it shows a strong silhouette and shape. After all, the character was supposed to be a warrior/guardian, so it has to look strong. When choosing the design option, I also need to think of their functionality which strengthens my choice in selecting a good design.

4. The Scorch Wyrm

Fig 5.1 - 5.9 Color Selection (Week 6, 03/06/2024)

Yes, I know it's a lot of options. It's because I love this character more than others and it's because I am planning to make a 3D Model of this mob. I had to be careful when picking the color so that I won't misss some details in later progression while also think of their functionality.

Fig 5.10 Selective Options (Week 6, 03/06/2024)

From this options, Mr. Kanaan told me that I should continue on either #3 or #8. I picked #3 not just because it's simpler, but I know very well that it could save me some time when sculpting it.

FEEDBACKS

Week 3 (08/06/2024)

  • Write down their persona
  • Design is okay, now can proceed to color exploration

Week 4 (15/05/2024)

  • Try to play around with the saturation of the color abit

Week 5 (22/05/2024)

  • Same feedback as Week 4

Week 6 (29/05/2024)

  • You can proceed to render and further develop the design now that you have confirmed which design to continue

REFLECTION

While doing this project, I realized I made a grave mistake which is not doing the arena as I forgot that I had to. Although Mr. Kanaan did told me if I got too focused on character, I must atleast show a concept on the arena (which I will show in the next project). Tweaking around with the design while maintaining the desired silhouette is a good experience for me as I can create more unique shapes for my characters. Now that I have the basic concept done, it's time for me to move on to the next project which is making a 3D of it.
